The fix is rather easy.
Find where Spore saves it's documents. On Windows XP it is at

 \Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\SPORE.

Delete all the cache files. SPORE won't mind it will recreate them as it needs to.
I had to clear out the entire folder my game to start again but you might not have to.
